چکیده

Aims. We present a general method to calculate radiative transfer including scattering in the continuum as well as in lines in spherically symmetric systems that are influenced by the effects of general relativity (GR). We utilize a comoving wavelength ansatz that allows to resolve spectral lines throughout the atmosphere. Methods. The used numerical solution is an operator splitting (OS) technique that uses a characteristic formal solution. The bending of photon paths and the wavelength shifts due to the effects of GR are fully taken into account, as is the treatment of image generation in a curved spacetime. Results. We describe the algorithm we use and demonstrate the effects of GR on the radiative transport of a two level atom line in a neutron star like atmosphere for various combinations of continuous and line scattering coefficients. In addition, we present grey continuum models and discuss the effects of different scattering albedos on the emergent spectra and the determination of effective temperatures and radii of neutron star atmospheres.

Relativistic Radiative Transfer for Spherical Flows

We present a new complete set of Lagrangian relativistic hydrodynamical equations describing the transfer of energy and momentum between a standard fluid and a radiation fluid in a general non-stationary spherical flow. The new set of equations has been derived for a particular application to the study of the cosmological Quark–Hadron transition but can also be used in other contexts.

Conservative special relativistic radiative transfer for multidimensional astrophysical simulations: motivation and elaboration

Many astrophysical phenomena exhibit relativistic radiative flows. While velocities in excess of v ∼ 0.1c can occur in these systems, it has been common practice to approximate radiative transfer to O(v/c). In the case of neutrino transport in core-collapse supernovae, this approximation gives rise to an inconsistency between the lepton number transfer and lab frame energy transfer, which have ...

General Relativistic Radiative Transfer in Hot Astrophysical Plasmas: a Characteristic Approach

In this paper we present a characteristic method for solving the transfer equation in differentially moving media in a curved spacetime. The method is completely general, but its capabilities are exploited at best in presence of symmetries, when the existence of conserved quantities allows to derive analytical expressions for the photon trajectories in phase space. In spherically–symmetric, sta...

Parallelization Strategies for ALI Radiative Transfer in Moving Media

We describe the method we have used to parallelize our spherically symmetric special relativistic short characteristics general radiative transfer code PHOENIX. We describe some possible parallelization strategies and show why they would be inefficient. We discuss the multiple parallelization strategy techniques that we have adopted. We briefly discuss generalizing these strategies to full 3-D ...

Milne-Eddington Solutions for Relativistic Plane-Parallel Flows

Radiative transfer in a relativistic plane-parallel flow, e.g., an accretion disk wind, is examined in the fully special relativistic treatment. Under the assumption of a constant flow speed, for the relativistically moving atmosphere we analytically obtain generalized Milne-Eddington solutions of radiative moment equations; the radiation energy density, the radiative flux, and the radiation pr...

In this paper we study the application of a simplified method to solve the dynamic radiative transfer problem in expanding envelopes. The method, which requires a computational effort similar to that of the diffusion approximation, is based on the use of a generalization of the Eddington closure relationship allowing the inclusion of scattering and relativistic corrections to O (v/c). We apply ...
